Portieres or Curtains for Doorways
A PORTIERE is a curtain that hangs in a doorway rather than a window. It is a graceful solution where a door would take up too much space or block passage and was often used in small Arts & Crafts bungalows.
Because a portiere is not hanging in direct sunlight, it is often more elaborately decorated than Arts & Crafts curtains.
Portieres are usually hung within the doorway frame so that the mounting looks the same from both sides. Rings are recommended for ease of opening. Portieres are constructed so that they appeared finished on each side. Even if only one side is decorated, the other side should be finished with the same or another decorator fabric, not a lining, or, as another option, a deep hem that concealed embroidery backing.
